During the 2nd CWG meet, under the ‘Culture Unites All’ campaign, Shri Sudarshan Pattnaik from Odisha created sand art on the theme at Puri Beach on 14 May 2023. The sand art celebrated the shared cultural heritage of the world formed through human explorations and connections. The artwork depicted the traditional boat of Odisha known as ‘boita’ symbolic of the shared cultural, civilizational and maritime heritage of the world. Odisha’s rich maritime heritage is an important part of its socio-cultural identity, which is reflected in the celebration of Odia maritime and trade festival known as Bali Jatra. These maritime pasts are evidence of the exchange of thought, philosophy, culture, technology, or people bringing the world closer together.

Credited as a pioneer of sand art in India, Shri SudarsanPattnaik is the recipient of the third highest civilian honour the Padma Shri, for his distinguished service. His sand art installations are world-renowned, and he has represented India in various competitions at a global level. Sand Art is a unique public art form that has wide cultural significance throughout the world, especially in places with an abundance of deserts, beaches, and riverbeds. In many parts of the world, Sand Art is a popular medium for storytelling, used to convey mythological and religious narratives.

The installation was inaugurated by Shri G. Kishan Reddy, Hon’ble Union Minister for Culture, Tourism and DoNER and Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, Hon’ble Minister of State for Culture and Parliamentary Affairs. The installation was visited by delegates from the G20 member nations, invitee countries, and international organisations. The initiative was supported by the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC).
