International Museum Day

Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya and other museums of the city under the banner Forum of museums organised various programmes and activities to mark the International Museum Day on 18th May 2015.
The programmes at IGRMS began with an inauguration of a special exhibition on ‘Museums of Bhopal’ mounted at Rock art Shelter Exhibition Gallery of Manav Sangrahalaya. The exhibition was inaugurated, Mr. Ashwini Lohani, Commissioner & MD, MP Tourism. The photographic exhibition is dedicated to Museum of Bhopal aka Madhav Rao Sapre Smriti Samachar Patra Sangrahalaya, Regional Science Centre, State Museum, Tribal Museum, Bijakshara Sangrahalaya, Telephone Museum, Dushyant Kumar Smarak Pandulipi Sangrahalaya, National Museum of Natural History, Janjatiya Sangrahalaya, Aakaar Doll Museum, Shankar Dayal Sharma Swatantrata Sangram Sangrahalaya, Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya and Remember Bhopal Museum.

Apart from this, a colloquium on ‘Museum for a sustainable society' was held.Ashwini Lohani, the chief guest of the colloquium expressed that- Museums are the most important part of Tourism of any country and they also play an important role in development of society. He also mentioned to publish a map consisting of all museums of Bhopal. On this occasion representatives of all museums were present and they welcomed the newly established ‘Remember Bhopal Museum’. The colloquium was chaired by Prof Sarit Kumar Choudhuri (Director, IGRMS), in his address Prof Choudhuri introduced the colloquium with this year’s theme by ICOM and explained the contribution of museums in social development around the world. Former Vice-Chancellor of Dr Hari Singh Gaur University, Mr M.L. Gaur also participated in this colloquium. Representatives of all museums of Bhopal participated in this colloquium and shared their opinion and discussed the problems faced. The programme was coordinated by Mr. Arun Kiro (Assistant Curator, Manav Sangrahalaya) and Mr. Rakesh Bhatt (Assistant Keeper) gave the vote of thanks.  
 
In the evening of 18May, 2015 renowned Kathak dancer from New Delhi, Ms Shrinjini Kulkarni performed Kathak. Ms. Shinjini Kulkarni, Born into the Ninth Generation of the Kalka Bindadin Lineage, Shinjini Kulkarni is the granddaughter of the Kathak Maestro Pt.Birju Maharaj. She began her training in kathak dance at the tender age of five under the tutelage of her grandfather. She began performing at the age of eight, and has ever since been exploring her passion for dance.
On the occasion of International Museum Day, Ms Kulkarni commenced her performance with ‘Shiva Vandana’. In her next performance she performed traditional Kathak in Teen Taal, where presented the technical aspects of Kathak of Lukhnow Gharana. Her last performance of the eve was a Dadra with lyrics ‘Rangi Saari Gulabi Chunariya’. She was accompanied by Mr. Zaheen Khan on Tabla, Mr. Sameer Mohammad Alvi on Sarangi and Mr. Zaki Ahmed gave vocal support.
 
On 19th May, a ‘Treasure Hunt has been organised in the museum premises from 8.30 am. The interested people can register themselves with Mr. Sudhir Shrivastava(Publication Officer) – 9479438303. On Monday, 18th May 2015 all the exhibitions will open and entry all the programmes are free.
