EXHIBITION Woven Narratives

EXHIBITION

Woven Narratives

3rd G20 CWG Meeting, Hampi (July 9- 12, 2023)

The exhibition ‘Woven Narratives’ spotlighted the third priority of the CWG i.e., the ‘Promotion of Cultural and Creative Industries and Creative Economy’ and presented as part of the 3rd CWG meeting in Hampi (July 9- 12, 2023). The exhibition focused on Indian handlooms as one of the important sectors of the cultural and creative economy of the country. The selection of textile exhibits represented India’s diverse geographical, distinct ecologies and creative contexts by narrating their histories and design features, as well as the aesthetic and technical connections some of them share with other parts of the world. Handwoven textiles, in this way, became metaphors for both national identities as much as for the recognition of shared global cultures.

Handlooms across the regions of India may be seen as forming specific economic sectors, while expressing varied individual, social and cultural meanings for the communities involved in their production, trade, and use. In the exhibition, these are explained through distinct ecologies which are observed to employ their own specific network of skills, expertise, and practitioners, while having vital links with other sectors of the Indian and international economy — that of Art & Design; Farming & Agriculture; Nomadic & Indigenous Traditions; Fashion & Apparel; and Patronage & Philanthropy. The exhibits’ selection comprises handwoven textiles from North, West, Central, South, East and Northeast India, and includes khadi sarees from West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh; brocades from Varanasi, Chanderi, Paithan and Kanchipuram; ikats from Odisha and Gujarat; a ceremonial shawl from Nagaland and a woolen blanket from Ladakh; among other art works, tapestries, sculptures, and installations. The exhibition also includes a weaving demonstration of Karnataka handloom.

The exhibition was presented by the CWG, Ministry of Culture, Government of India, with support from the JSW Foundation. It was inaugurated by Shri Amitabh Kant, India's G20 Sherpa during the third G20 Sherpa Meeting, Hampi from 13 to 16 August 2023.

Woven Narratives was visited by delegates from the G20 member nations, invitee countries, and international organisations, and was open to the public from 14July to 15August 2023, at Hampi Art Labs JSW Vidyanagar.

The exhibition was curated by Shri Mayank Mansingh Kaul and Devi Art Foundation with assistance from South Zone Cultural Centre. The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue.
