Re(ad)dress: Return of Treasures

1st G20 CWG Meeting, Khajuraho (February 22- 25, 2023)

The exhibition titled ‘Re(ad)dress: Return of Treasures' engaged with the first priority of the CWG, ‘Protection and Restitution of Cultural Property’. With a spotlight on the stories of 26 repatriated Indian objects and other similar case studies from across the globe, Re(ad)dress initiated a dialogue about the need, relevance and importance of repatriation and restitution of cultural property. Successful case studies of global cooperation made in the direction of repatriation of cultural property were also displayed. The exhibition was conceptualized in six pertinent thematic sections: Cultural Heritage, Repatriation of Cultural Property, Historical Precedents, Conventions and Guiding Principles, Global Cooperation, and Glimpses of the Return. The exhibition included an interactive and immersive experience through a holographic display of select artefacts returned to India over the years.

Re(ad)dress: Return of Treasures wasjointly organised by the G20 Culture Working Group (CWG), Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and National Museum Institute (NMI) under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture (MoC), Government of India at the Maharaja Chhatrasal Convention Centre in Khajuraho. The exhibition was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Union Minister of Culture, Tourism and DoNER, Shri G. Kishan Reddy; the Hon’ble Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Dr Virendra Kumar; the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan; and the Hon’ble Minister of State for Culture and External Affairs, Smt Meenakshi Lekhi.

Re(ad)dress was visited by delegates from the G20 member nations, invitee countries, and international organisations. The exhibition was open to the public from 25 - 28th February 2023 and was accompanied by a catalogue. The project was co-curated by Prof. Manvi Seth, Head, Deptt. of Museology & Dean, Indian Institute of Heritage and Dr Juhi Sadiya, Assistant Professor, Deptt. of Museology, Indian Institute of Heritage, and supported by the Archaeological Survey of India and the Indian Institute of Heritage.
