Chamba Thaal /Dashavtar Thali
A decorative brass metal plate

Chamba thaal is a decorative brass metal plate embossed with images of gods and goddesses. It is a significant item of Chamba metal craft. A design is superimposed on a plain brass plate using tiny tools. Two types of thaals are prevalent in the metal craft tradition of Chamba, one is Ganesh thaal and the other is Vishnu thaal. The present object is a bigger-sized traditional ritual plate consisting of Lord Vishnu seated on a lotus as the central image and surrounded by his incarnations, Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narsingha, Vamana, Parshurama, Rama, Krishna, and the Kalki. This traditional object is used by the Gaddis and other folk communities in households and temples for religious offerings as well as in wedding ceremonies and other auspicious occasions. It is also used as a decorative item.
