Pabuji Ki Phad
A scroll painting

Phad is a tradition of scroll painting practiced by the Bhopa community of Rajasthan. The main theme of Phad painting is to illustrate the local legends or folk heroes. Mostly the stories from the life of Pabuji and Devnarayanji are depicted. It is made on coarse cloth using colours extracted from natural sources. The Phad is painted by the Chippa community called Joshi living in Bhilwara, Chittorgarh and Udaipur of Rajasthan and the Bhopa community who are considered to be the priest singers of Pabuji. Bhopa performs the epics with the help of his wife Bhopi roaming through villages. The painting is interpreted or explained to the audience through music, songs and storytelling. The sequence painted on the Phad is the main deity Pabuji (a Rajput chieftain who sacrificed his life for protection of others) at the centre, flanked on the right by his courtiers. Pabuji is worshiped by herdsmen, agrarian communities, and nomads.
