A Madhubani painting

Madhubani painting is practiced in the Mithila region of Bihar. Krishna Raas is a popular theme in Madhubani painting. The painting is depicting the scene of Lord Krishna with flute in one hand along with the Gopikas on the bank of the river Yamuna. The Gopikas are seen carrying water, Lord Krishna is depicted behind the Gopikas standing under a Kadamba tree. The snake king, Kaliya Nag is also depicted on the lower portion of the painting inside the river Yamuna. The background of the painting features the tree, flowers, birds which enhance the natural beauty of the scene. The painting is characterized by intricate motifs and vibrant colours. The colours used in Madhubani painting are also significant and each colour represents a different emotion or meaning. The colours are derived from natural sources. Besides Krishna Raas other mythological stories like scene from Ramayana and Mahabharata are also popular theme of Madhubani painting.
