TIPARI
A Ceremonial Basket

Tipari is a ceremonial basket profoundly used by the Muria tribe of Chhattisgarh during marriage ceremonies. It is a double layer lidded basket woven in a twilled pattern in the inner portion and in a close weft and warp pattern on the outer side. The two layers are tied at the rim by a bamboo split ring. The body and the lid are decorated by floral designs made of thin layers of bamboo strips. Among the Murias this basket is gifted to the bride during wedding ceremonies. Mostly sweets, clothes and ornaments are kept in this basket. At the in- laws house the bride keeps her belongings in it and this is treated as her property.
