A wooden chair

Kadia is a wooden chair belonging to the family head of Konyak Naga tribe. The chair denotes the pride, power, and status of the owner. The chair is carved out of a single piece of wood. The seat and the backrest of the chair are proportionately built by scooping out from the same log. The chair is decorated with different motifs in high relief. At the top of the backrest, a human face mask is made in high relief as well as both the hand rest portion of the chair is fashioned in the form of a tiger, below which two small brass face masks are studded. In the front part of the horizontal seat and the edge of the backrest, brass-made circular pendants are fixed. The chair stands on four legs to support the entire structure. Lizard-like animal figures are carved in high relief on the leg portion. The carvings visually convey the status of the owner as well as the importance of the object. The motifs and related symbols speak a language of its own. Mithun symbolizes wealth, the tiger symbolizes valour while the other animals narrate the heroic deeds.
