BAGH (TIGER)
A Madhubani painting

Madhubani painting is a folk painting tradition practiced in the Mithila region of Bihar. The colours used in this painting are made of natural extracts from plants and other natural sources. Brushes are made out of bamboo sticks. Orange, red, green, yellow, and black colours are mostly used in this painting. Madhubani paintings are based on mythological characters, Hindu gods and goddesses, stories from two great Indian epics Ramayana and Mahabharata, important ceremonies in Hindu religion, marriage scenes, and depictions of nature. The present painting is a depiction of a forest scene where a tiger is waiting for its prey. The tiger is a symbol of power and strength which is shown here with its prey. A small deer and two buffalos are painted on both sides. The painting is made on handmade paper and the paper is treated with cow dung to preserve the strong colour of the natural pigments. The outlines of the images are painted black and blank spaces are filled with floral motifs. Bharni, Kachni, Tantrik, & Godhana, etc. are the steps followed to make this painting.
