The Delhi Public Library is an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Culture, established with technical assistance from UNESCO and was inaugurated by Prime Minister, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, on 27th October, 1951. DPL is the busiest Public Library in South-East Asia.

Network :Network

The Delhi Public Library has a network of a Central and Zonal Library, 3 Branch Libraries, 24 Sub-Branch Libraries, 2 Community Libraries, 10 Resettlement Colonies Libraries, 73 Mobile Service Points and 24 Deposit Stations spread all over Delhi. Additionally, it runs a Braille library for the visually impaired, Prison library for the inmates of Tihar Jail and provides mobile library services to areas without library facilities. All main branches libraries have a separate children’s section.

Collection Collection

The Library collection is precious treasure of the Delhi Public Library. The collection consists of rich and wide range of books, journals and other reading materials in Hindi, English, Urdu, Punjabi & other Indian Languages. With an ever expanding membership, the Delhi Public Library has a collection of over 18 lakh books. The collection has a book for every reader whatever their reading taste is.

gramophone/records/cassettes

Total stock of gramophone/records/cassettes in the library is 9,431.The Delhi Public Library lends gramophone records/audio/video cassettes for its registered members free of charge. These records/cassettes comprise classical instrument and light music, bhajans, ghazals, film songs etc. Readers of DPL can make use of them through Head phones/Computer Accessories.

Delhi Public Library is open all seven days except the National Holidays.

SPECIAL SERVICES:

Internet Free Internet Service

The Delhi Public library is providing free public Internet service to the members of Central Library and 11 branch libraries.

CD/DVD Free CD/DVD Services

The DPL has launched the free lending of their CD/DVD collection at the Central Library and 4 branch libraries. The DVD collection comprises English and Hindi movies, as also educational, recreational movies for the children.

Children’s section Children’s section

The DPL has children’s sections at the Central Library and three branch libraries. New books, CD/DVDs, computers, games and attractive furniture have added to the existing collections.

Mobile library services Mobile library services

The Mobile Library service was started in the year 1953 with an aim to provide library services at the doorsteps of the readers. Delhi Public Library is operating 4 Mobile Vans in 73 areas and 4,275 registered members are availing Mobile Library services.

Braille library services Braille library services

The Braille Department of the library provides specialized Braille services along with transcriptions in Braille. The total collection of is 15,699 and Braille Mobile Library Services are operated to 20 Institutions with delivery of books to those readers by post.
